RP Motorsport Racing – centers the points in Race 1 at Spa
RP Motorsport Racing took another points finish in today’s race 1 of the Formula V8 3.5 held at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
Rookie driver Vitor Baptista delivered a solid performance, ending up in a positive sixth place, his best result so far this season. On the other hand, bad luck hit team-mate Johnny Cecotto Jr. in the last lap of the race, when a contact with another driver put his day to an end after an outstanding recovery on the cars he had in front. Although RP Motorsport Racing lost the chance to have both its cars in the top 10 again, the Italian squad is confident for tomorrow.
Johnny Cecotto Jr. (#21) – Q1 P9 1:59.293 – Race 1 P11 +1 lap
“A difficult first race. In the final stages we had a great pace and closed the gap to the leader by keeping an even quicker pace than him, but we didn’t have enough speed on the straight. We have been struggling on this since yesterday. During the race it was also tough to have the traction we meeded, and I reckon this cost us dearly, we had a good race but I couldn’t overtake. I did a great move on the outside of Blanchimont. Then, during the last lap I overtook Fittipaldi but he closed the door on me and we went in the gravel”.
Vitor Baptista (#22) – Q1 P12 1:59.929 – Race 1 P6 +6.363
“I decided to take a safe approach because I wanted to finish this race. I know this track and I knew my pace was good. I had a positive start and then I was just growing stronger. I stayed close to my team mate, who was really competitive, and in the second part of the race we were both among the fastest. The last three laps were amazing, we had a great fight and then in the last few corners I stepped up to the sixth position. This is my best result so far, but I’m already focused on tomorrow. I need to do a bit better in qualifying, otherwise it’s going to be really difficult to overtake”.
